Class meets in Lewis Hall 100, Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 - 11am. The course will be synchronous hybrid. Class will also be recorded.

In the past students have found that the best way to engage with the material is synchronously—either in-person or on Zoom. Futher, we expect that in-class attendance will drop enough after the first few lectures so you should be able to comfortably attend class if you choose to.

You will be expected to keep up with the lecture material.

No lecture time conflicts are permitted.

When are discussion sections?

Weekly discussion sections, while optional, are strongly encouraged as the structures of questions most closely mimics our exam questions. Discussions are currently planned for Thursday and Friday.

When is the final exam? Do you allow time conflicts?

The final exam will take place in-person during the regularly scheduled final exam slot on Tuesday December 17, 3 - 6pm. The exam will be held in person, not online. For more information, see the Final Exam Calendar.

No final exam time conflicts are permitted.

What is the conflict policy for the course?

The basic policy is the following:

ENROLLMENT TIME CONFLICTS: This class will NOT allow time conflicts.
FINAL EXAM CONFLICTS: This class will NOT accommodate final exam conflicts. Additionally, no accommodations will be made for non-university travel.

I will be able to officially declare the data science major soon; can I enroll in this course?

[updated 4/23] As of this time, we can’t provide guarantees on non-Data Science student enrollment. We will prioritize declared Data Science students, at least through Phase 1.

I have a Concurrent Enrollment Request that hasn’t been approved yet, what should I do? What are my chances of getting into this class?

[updated 4/23] Given heavy demand from UC Berkeley students, we are currently unable to enroll any concurrent enrollment students.

I am an undergrad, can I take INFO 258?

No, you can only take DATA 101.

I am a grad student, can I take DATA 101?

No, you can only take INFO 258.

I have taken/am taking CS 186. Can I still enroll in Data 101?

Yes. There is no duplication of credit restrictions between the two courses.

What are the official prerequisites for this course?

The official prerequisites for undergraduates are

CS61B
DATA C100, CS189, INFO 251, or DATA 144.

These prerequisites may not be taken concurrently with Data 101.

Will the official prerequisites be enforced for undergraduates?

The official prerequisites are being strictly enforced by Data Science. Decisions on any requests for exceptions to this policy are being made by Data Science advisors. To request an exception see the Data Science Courses Enrollments page. Do NOT email instructors about this; we do not make these decisions.

I have another enrollment issue - can the instructors assist me, make an exception for my case or provide me with an “enrollment code”?

For undergraduates: No. The instructors do not handle any enrollment issues. If you need assistance with enrollment or think your circumstances warrant exceptional consideration, you must discuss those with an enrollment advisor. They are the only ones authorized to handle such situations and enroll you. See first question above for more links about enrollment resources.

I am a campus student and would like to audit the course, what can I do?

Most class materials are available online to all campus students, and you can access the lecture videos, slides, etc. without limit, as well as use the online Data 101 DataHub, our JupyterHub instance for this class.

Note however that the class EdStem, our only other class resource, is reserved for enrolled students, as homework details and solutions are discussed in that environment.

What is the proctoring/accommodation policy for exams?

Exams will be in-person and subject to standard proctoring procedures, with appropriate accommodations for DSP students.

What is the alternate exam policy?

We are planning for an out-of-class midterm, which will offer one alternate time for course-related conflicts. Details TBD.

There will be no alternate final exam time beyond the standard time assigned by scheduling.

I would like to apply for a (u)GSI position for this course. What should I do?

All applications for Academic Student Employee positions are managed centrally; you can find all the details here: Joining Data Course Staff. Please do not email the instructors individually with your resume/etc, as they are not in a position to hire you.
